Who Was There?

According to Moonalice legend, when you think of Hermosa Beach, you think of surf, sand and sunburn. Did you know that laughter is one of this town’s prime industries? The 9th largest employer in Hermosa Beach is the Comedy & Magic Club; 1.4% of the people in this town work there! This focus on comedy dates from the Moonalice tribe’s earliest days here, when prodigiously strong hemp products caused everyone to laugh to the point of urinary incontinence. A club with good plumbing was the obvious next step. The rest, as they say, is legend.

According to Moonalice legend, today would have been the 77th birthday of Eugene “Porky” Lee. Porky was a fixture in Hal Roach’s Little Rascals from 1935 to 1939, in the role of Spanky’s little brother. Contrary to any impressions you may have gained from Eddie Murphy on Saturday night live, it was Porky – not Bu’Whee – who originated the catchphrase, “o-tay!”
