Who Was There?

According to Moonalice legend, humans have inhabited Alamo for 5,000 years without feeling the need to incorporate. The town's name purportedly dates to some time after 1851, when pioneers Mary Ann and John Jones settled here. Wikipedia claims the name is Spanish for poplar trees and refers to the ones growing along the San Ramon River. A likely story, I'm sure, but not altogether a convincing one.. We consulted the Moonalice legend and discovered today's poster by Ron Donovan. It depicts Bleeding Heart Moonalice, the only survivor of the 1836 Alamo massacre in San Antonio, Texas. At one time, Bleeding Heart had a head, torso, arms and legs, but they got blown off - one at a time, like the knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail - by Santa Ana's soldiers. Even the heart that survived suffered a nick from Jim Bowie's knife. But Bleeding Heart pulled himself up by his aorta and traveled to California, riding in a bucket hanging from Mary Ann and John Jones' Conestoga wagon. Upon arrival here, Bleeding Heart presented Mary with a garland of roses, in thanks for which Mary Ann and John agreed to let Bleeding Heart name the town.
